Sankara Eye Hospital, Anand, Gujarat
Gujarat has more than 500,000 people who are blind. Fortunately 80% of the blindness is curable according to NAB (National Association for Blind), India. Legal blindness is defined as visual acuity of not greater than 20/200 in the better eye with best correction or a visual field of less than 20 degrees. As per the provisional results of Population Census 2001, the population of Gujarat in March 2001, stood at 50.7 million, of this 1,045,465 were disabled. To address this problem Sankara Eye hospital was constructed at a cost of $3.5 Million dollars and inaugurated in October, 2008. In a very short span of 2 years, the Gujarat hospital is establishing itself as a premier eye care hospital, providing free eye care to the needy. It conducted more than 10,000 free eye surgeries in 2010 alone, and it has a capacity of 20,000 free eye surgeries per year. Sankara Eye hospital in Anand has already received accolades from the state of Gujarat. Recently, Gujarat State Blindness Control Society, Gandhinagar recognized Sankara Eye Hospital as the 3rd best in the state in providing free eye care services to the community.
