Yeh Dosti: A Heartwarming Story of Friendsip

“We are best friends, and we take care of each other!” said Vanita and Nirmala. They are neighbors and inseparable friends who arrived at the RJ Sankara Eye Hospital, Panvel, for their cataract surgeries.

Both were in their late 60s, and their children had grown up and moved to the cities in search of better opportunities.

A few years ago, Vanita suffered a major accident, which led to the amputation of her left leg. Instead of lamenting her fate, she persevered, receiving a prosthetic limb—the Jaipur Foot—with the support of a local NGO.

Despite her physical challenge, Vanita is a farmer—a demanding occupation where she has to stand for long hours and endure harsh weather conditions.

Curious, we asked, “How do you manage farming now, Vanita-bai?”

With a warm smile, she gestured toward Nirmala and said, “She is with me—my friend—Nirmala! She does the plowing and harvesting. I handle crop segregation, cutting, and peeling corn—tasks I can manage while sitting. We work together!”

Then, turning affectionately to her friend, she added, “Now, it’s my turn to take care of Nirmala as she just had her cataract surgery. Mine is scheduled for next month!”

“We are best friends!” Nirmala chimed in proudly.

The two embraced, their laughter genuine and heartwarming—a true testament to friendship, resilience, and unwavering support.
